Maria spends her childhood living in the shadow of the blond ballerina, her adopted sister, Eliza. Thoughtful and restless, Maria shares in her fathers passion for all things Greece - Greek philosophy, Greek language, Greek culture. Set in Romania during the first half of the nineteenth century, times are tumultuous. As the young sisters grow older and marry, the political situation forces change. Eliza must flee to Argentina - the land of tango. Maria remains in Romania with her Greek husband and their children, relying on Elizan's letters and gifts until they suddenly stop arriving... This Sun Which Blinds Me explores the innocence of youth, the complexities of love, the struggles of life during the adversities of this historic period set within exotic escapes and the highlights of Greek cuisine. A pure delight to read and perfect way to spend an afternoon. Draghici's novel receives not only literary, but also gastronomic awards. Although there are no Michelin stars for literature, such an initiative should be considered. - Alexandru Matei
